EMDR – Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing.
EMDR therapy is relatively new and originates from the US where it was developed by Francine Shapiro to help in the treatment of veterans of the war in Vietnam. The therapy is based upon correcting thought processes, which have become negatively affected by the traumatic event.
The treatment is quite intense and can be fast acting, requiring a relatively few number of sessions but of longer duration. EMDR may recommended to be provided in conjunction with CBT.
The number of therapists with EMDR training is limited. However the TraumaCare team has been arranging EMDR for a number of years and we have a good knowledge of therapy providers with an established network of therapists. We are also experienced in arranging EMDR and CBT in integrated packages as may sometimes be recommended.
